Dr. Richman Performing Open Heart Surgery (Mitral Valve Repair)

I am always asked what the human heart actually looks like in a patient’s chest.

This is the video I made several years ago fixing a mitral valve with severe mitral insufficiency secondary to mitral valve prolapse doing a resection and putting in a ring and then fixing a large hole between the two atria called a patent foramen ovale.

I think you will notice how long it takes to actually get the actual operation on the heart started.. it requires near perfection to just put in tubes to put the patient on cardiopulmonary bypass in order to stop the heart before the operation starts. Just to orient you, the camera is on my head and the patient’s head is to my left and the patient’s feet to my right
